John Lennon: October 9, 1940- December 8, 1980
It was twenty-five years ago today that John Lennon was assassinated in front of his apartment building in New York City. Besides his musical work with The Beatles, solo and with his wife Yoko Ono, Lennon is also known for his political activitism and tireless campaign for world peace. Regardless of what one might think of his music or his politics, most people would agree that the world lost some of its innocence the day he was murdered. We can only imagine what Lennon would have done or thought about things like the AIDS epidemic, the environment, Islamic terrorism, the Gulf Wars, etc. We may not have always agreed with what he would say, but I'm sure his voice would have been heard loud and clear, and he is missed.

Imagine all the people, living for today...

Imagine all the people, living life in peace...

Imagine all the people, sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one,

I hope some day you'll join us,

And the world will live as one.

Politics aside, it just occurred to me after re-reading this post that a great way to remember John Lennon would be for everyone who reads this post to leave their favorite Lennon/Beatles song in the comments section. And I know EVERYONE has a favorite Beatles song...

Comments:
I loved his music, and back when I was a Democrat there was a time that Imagine was my favorite song. Never has the call to secular socialism been stated so beautifully. Of course the people who imagined what he imagined led to some of the worst atrocities in human history, but no fellow travelers are ever held to account for that.

I love the Beatles. I believe that their music will be listened to centuries from now. They also had some very conservative messages (e.g. Tax Man). My favorite Beatles song is Revolution -- a masterful indictment of revolutionary fervor and a plea for slow incremental change.

'Cause you know it's gonna be alright

Hmmm. I guess you could call it secular socialism. I think it also evokes some of the imagery of the Messianic era, when everyone is supposed to get along with everyone, etc.

My favorite Beatles song is hard to narrow down. I can tell you that my favorite album is definitely Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Pretty much any song on there would do, but if you pinned me down to only one it would probably be "With a Little Help From My Friends".

What would you think if I sang out of tune,
Would you stand up and walk out on me.
Lend me your ears and I'll sing you a song,
And I'll try not to sing out of key.
I get by with a little help from my friends.

"I guess you could call it secular soicalism."

Hello?

"Imagine no religion" = secular
"Imagine no possessions" = socialism

Messianic era? In which religion's Messianic era is religion abolished?

You may say I'm a right winger
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And buy yourself a big ole' gun.

GREAT POST!
I'm old enough to remember watching the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. I remember parents everywhere aghast over their "long" hair and crazy attire (they wore matching suits and ties!). I was only 8 years old, but I remember the impact of the Beatles like it was yesterday. I'd have to say my favorite Beatle song is "In my Life"...but it certainly is hard to choose. My favorite Beatle was and still is Paul...When I was 8 years old, I just knew I would marry him. But, he went for Linda instead...even when he had a second chance...he settled for Heather! Who is your favorite Beatle?

The Beatles are overrated, but what the hey. I still like them.

Jack...you didn't really just say that, did you?!!!

I always think about Valotte - and his poor sons who both, for one reason or another, lost a daddy.

Or, beautiful boy, since I also have a Darling Sean.

But, I can't possibly name a favorite beatles tune. It really depends on the mood, doesn't it!

The Beatles are way before my time, but I still like 'em anyway. Imagine is one of my all time favorite songs.

Cruisin Mom - glad you liked the post. I've always had a hard time deciding if I liked Paul or John better. Always thought Paul was "cooler", but as I got older I appreciated John's wit more.

Mirty - that's so funny about Hey Jew because I used to think the exact same thing! I would listen closely to be sure there wasn't some antisemitic slur buried in there and there never was! Its scary that our kids can't relate to some of the music that even we would consider "classic."

birdwoman- I think one of the cool things about the Beatles is that they really do have a tune for every mood.

jack & essie - beatles are not overated and not before your time. They are classic and timeless!

Favourite John Lennon (post Beatles) songs:

Mother
Isolation
Working Class Hero
Imagine (of course!)
Crippled Inside
How?
Oh My Love
Aisumasen
Nobody Loves You

It's stupid to love somebody you never met, but I loved him. His murder was an unspeakably sad event.
Q

I like Yesterday myself. And no possessions is communism. Imagine the government owning the means of production is socialism.
